Kamera Series / talk and film screening / Leporello / Rome

On Wednesday, 27 May at 7 pm, Leporello in Rome hosts the presentation of KAMERA SERIES | Experimental Films and Printed Matter, introduced by Giuliana Prucca – writer, curator, and founder of AVARIE – and Valentina Besegher Scotti – visual artist, curator, and co-founder of Labor Neunzehn.

The program includes the participation of artist and filmmaker Andrea Dojmi, together with screenings of works by Ion Grigorescu and Christine Gedeon.

KAMERA SERIES
– curated by Labor Neunzehn and AVARIE in a former GDR building in Berlin – is a programme of moving-image exhibitions in dialogue with artists’ books, opening a space for critical exchange on contemporary image-making.

Each event is accompanied by the KAMERA CAHIERS, limited-edition publications, letterpress printed in Magister typeface, designed by Aldo Novarese in 1966. Across 24 pages, they unfold a missing image or an unreleased second of film, weaving together scripts, drawings, and notes, and including an object taken directly from the exhibition.

Artists invited between 2021 and 2025 are Lina Selander | Pauline Julier | Ion Grigorescu | Maria Iorio and Raphaël Cuomo | Louise Crawford and Stéphan Guéneau | Andrea Dojmi | Sergej Vutuc | Louise Schröder | Peter Downsbrough | Helga Fanderl | Christine Gedeon.

At Leporello, Giuliana and Valentina will discuss their collaboration on the KAMERA SERIES, tracing the project’s origins and the idea of creating a dialogue between experimental film formats and independent publishing. The event will offer insight into the curatorial framework of the series and its place within Berlin’s art scene.

The discussion will also address the challenge — and the necessity — of continuing to promote and support independent and unconventional artistic practices as a political act, a form of resistance, and an example of sustainability in a time marked by the growing crisis in public funding for culture.

The conversation will feature Andrea Dojmi, with a screening of his latest Super 8 film and a selection of works on paper. It will be followed by the projection of excerpts from experimental films by Ion Grigorescu and Christine Gedeon.

Publications by AVARIE, KAMERA, and participating artists, will be on display and available for purchase.

LEPORELLO – photobooks et al. is a bookshop devoted to photobooks as starting and connecting point with graphic design, architecture, illustrated books, essays, and literature. It is an exhibition venue and a project space focused on books and images, with the aim of promoting and disseminating a multidisciplinary and wide approach to visual culture. It is a word with a funny sound, reminding an accordion book, Mozart, or simply, in Italian, a small hare.
