About the workshop
Tap into the hidden and often overlooked sounds of everyday life in Alt-Treptow. In this immersive two-day workshop with sound artist Felicity Mangan, participants will explore attentive listening and micro-sensing practices supported by field recording tools and techniques. Through hands-on sessions, you’ll learn how to capture, edit, and transform environmental sounds into original sonic compositions.

Through guided listening sessions, recording excursions, and practical exercises, the workshop explores how environmental soundscapes, textures, and noises can be repurposed into rich sonic material. Felicity will share her artistic process and demonstrate tools and approaches for working with sound in both experimental and musical contexts.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have created their own short sound pieces using field recordings they collect and process during the sessions.

Who it’s for:
This workshop is open to beginners and experienced field recorders and music makers. Some prior knowledge of sound editing software would be helpful.

Day 1 – October 25

  • Introduction to field recording tools & techniques (contact microphones, hydrophones, electromagnetic microphones)
  • Guided listening exercises
  • Building a personalised field recording sound palette for music creation
  • Strategies for archiving your recordings
  • Outdoor recording session with field recording devices
  • Returning to Labor Neunzehn (Kiefholzstr. 19 Berlin 12435) between 15-16:00 For a moment to relax, share impressions, and have a short discussion.

Workshop to finish around 17:00

Day 2 – October 26
Time : 12:00 – 17:00 at Labor Neunzehn

  • Sharing workflows & composing with field recording techniques
  • Developing a piece using recordings collected in Spreewald
  • Group session: sharing & discussing work-in-progress sound pieces

Any recording equipment you have (contact mics, handheld recorders, etc.)
Pen and notebook for observations
Weather-appropriate clothing for outdoor recording
Water and snacks for the day
