DETOUR DE FORCE
by Rebecca BARON
2014 / b&w / sound / 1S / 29′ 00
DETOUR DE FORCE presents the world of thoughtographer Ted Serios, a charismatic Chicago bell hop who, in the mid-1960’s produced hundreds of Polaroid images from his mind. Constructed from 16 mm documentation of Serios’s sessions and audio recordings of Serios speaking with Dr. Jule Eisenbud, the Denver psychiatrist who championed his abilities, the film is more ethnography than biography, portraying the social and scientific environments in which Serios thrived. The film foregrounds the state of image and sound recording technologies of the period as essential to the emergence of Serios’s psychic photography. It is also a document of the filmmaker’s encounters with the archival materials themselves. The film enjoys a rich sound environment by Ernst Karel, Kyle Bruckmann and Guiseppe Ielasi.

Martina Bertoni »Chamber Reflections« 2023 (in progress)
Martina Bertoni | Cello and electronics
Her live-set explores the liminality of space-time perception through hypnotic, time-bending drones and melancholic voices of processed cellos. It features tracks from her previous releases and anticipations of new material from her new upcoming project »Chamber Reflections«, based on recorded journal of conversations between her instrument, anthropic environments and generative machines.
Martina Bertoni is an experimental cellist and composer. Her music channels emotional and physical depths, while exploring the liminal spaces between perception of space and sound, through recording and performing practices aimed to expand and challenge the listener’s experience. The core of her work is based on deconstructing the relationship with her own instrument by combining electronics and modern composition.
Classically trained cellist, Bertoni developed her research and practices around experimental and film music, for which her cello and her original works are featured in numerous records, works and soundtracks for films, series and documentaries.
After releasing two EPs in 2018 and 2019, she released her first full length album »All the ghosts are Gone« with the Icelandic label FALK in 2020, followed by the critically acclaimed Music for Empty Flats, released in 2021 by Karlrecords and listed by A Closer Listen among the 10 best Ambient Drone Albums of 2021.
At the beginning of 2023 she released her new album Hypnagogia with Karlrecords, once again to much critical praise.
Cluster is a new-music series devoted to the investigation of sound and notation, which provides musicians and composers with an exchange area in Berlin, at the crossroad of compositional and performance practices.
